Make WMP 9.0 Work in K-Meleon
Posted by: deaster2

Due to the "bugs" of FireFox, I gave K-Meleon a try...the more I use this browser, the more I'm liking it. In fact, I use K-Meleon exclusively on my Win2000 server and Win98 workstation. Now for the subject of this post:
I installed K-Meleon without a hitch...RealPlayer and Quicktime worked right out of the box, but Windows Media Player 9.0 wouldn't work on streaming videos.
I remembered a registry patch that applied to FireFox and tried it for K-Meleon...it worked! EVERYTHING is now working to perfection in K-Meleon.
To apply the patch:
Run regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MEDIAPLAYER\SHIMINCLUSIONLIST
Right click on the 'ShimInclusionList' folder, select 'add key', type 'K-MELEON.EXE'.
I then tried a WMP streaming video-worked to perfection. Before this patch, the WMP was grayed out.
CAUTION-Modifying the registry file in Windows can make your system unusable.
You are advised to make a back-up copy of your registry file BEFORE any modifications are done

I have tried the above and was not able to get it to work, after some hours of copying and pasting, I was finally able to get wave files to play. Now however, I cannot get any other file format to play. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks

If you have Mozilla or Firefox, you can copy its mimetypes.rdf to your KM profile directory. If not, you can download the file at the following address and see if it works for you.

http://home.comcast.net/~jsnj/mimeTypes.rdf

It'll probably open as a text file. If so, just right-click, Save Page As and save as mimeTypes.rdf to your KM profile directory, typically located here:

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\Profiles\default\xxxxxxx.slt\

That did not work either, I already had that file, but I went ahead and replaced in case it was damaged, still did not work. Is there anything else I could try?

Can you give an example site with a media file that won't handle properly in your KM?

jsnj mimeTypes file sets all to default, which is good normally, it is the best solution
(the best "trained" file i know).

to assosiate a file.type with Your favorite program. right click on a file with that extension on hdd(can be a fake dummy file with that extension or a downloaded one) then alter/assosiate with Your favourite program.

if that does not work it normally is Your windows not Your browser ; o (

else You can edid mimeTypes to use not default but the program You specify -
that also works when Your windows is half brocken! (but that takes more time)

since i understand You have an FF You could use the downloader of FF or the mimeTypes editor found here: http://gratisdei.com/FF.htm

This editor can be used with FF and is present in one of Sebastians issues but i do not recall which.

or just give an example like jsnj said.
maybe someone has encountered Your problem before & can give more specific hints.
regards

This is my mimeTypes file. The only file extention that I can open so far are wav files. I cannot open mpg file extentions or any thing else. Any help is greatly appreicated!

Looking for an example website that's problematic with the media files...not the actual mimetype file.

I used the Registry fix, and on Aug 1, K-Meleon was able to open the only site which I am familiar and uses embedded WMP 9.0, i.e. http://www.cbc.ca/audio.html I had done the same thing for Mozilla.
Earlier today it did not work. It does not work in Mozilla 1.7.2,. nor Firebox 0.9.3.
It works in NS7.1, and it does not even bring up the window in Opera 7.54.
However, it could be a station's glitch.

hi Fulvio;
it is great that You found and published it! (You are more stubborn than me, he he)
by transfering prefs, plugins and mimetypes.rdf most Gecko based browsers should work if netscape 7.1 does - i am going to try it anyway. thx & regards
