Announcing: K-Meleon On The Move

I've created a new thread as the old 'Making K-Meleon portable' was getting overlong.
To encourage ordinary users to use K-Meleon more widely, I decided to make it much easier to set up K-Meleon on a removable drive. So, here's an announcement of my complete package, comprising two programs - setup and loader - which extends the previous work in the old thread:
K-Meleon On The Move
====================
Release date: 02 March 2005
Introduction
------------
The K-Meleon On The Move package allows you to carry your favourite browser
around with you on a removable read/write drive such as a USB flash drive.
Facilities are provided to clone an existing K-Meleon installation from (say)
a hard drive to a removable drive, and to start K-Meleon from the removable
drive. No trace of the portable K-Meleon should be left on the host computer.
The installation ZIP file can be downloaded temporarily from:
http://www.bfndevelopment.com/cgi-bin/home/Members/DLTrack/DLTrack.cgi?User=2776&ID=1150&Code=8a8HVO
Please let me know of any problems. Also, when things have proven stable, I can provide the source code via email to those interested.

Douglas, I have been following the other thread, and I was just about to ask for something very much like this.
I think it might also be a good idea to add a post here, which looks something like:
To make K-Meleon on the Move work for you, here is what you need to do, starting from scratch:
1. Find a computer.
2.
3.
And the reason I suggest that step one is because I think people are very likely to respond to your announcement with something like, "So, are you telling me that ALL I need to do is --?-- and --?--, and I can have K-M up and running on a computer in Outer Mongolia?"
Also, I think it is always good to build a very nice, very basic, bridge between experts and the people who respect and admire their expertise. The late Carl Sagan taught us that. :-)
Thank you very much for your extremely important contribution.
Um, it WILL work in Outer Mongolia, won't it?
And, um, are you saying I, um, don't need, um . . . say, could you go over that one more time, please?
:-)

Hello Carson and Guenter,
Thank you both for your kind comments.
It is hard to know what level to start at with documentation and instructions. Do you spell things out in such detail that you don't teach the underlying principles and are easily thrown off track by the slightest real-life hiccup? Or do you provide a skeleton of core understanding on which the user can build the flesh of details themselves?
There is undoubtedly room for both ways, but I usually take a pragmatic approach and let a thing "float" with users until somebody asks for more/less.
As we get older (and K-Meleon users are older than most, thanks to Carson's thread!) we've just got to target our energies as best we can ...

I'm getting a server error on the download link?

I second Carson and guenter in finding Douglas iniative a timely one, to say the least... I had stated it in the other thread, but there's no such thing as too much praise for a good job done.
Having said that, I am also having the problem reported by Tutu.
Cheers, people.

Hello Tutu and Midas,
Sorry to hear you're having problems with the download link. I've checked and the server is rather flaky today - it only worked for me about 50% of the time.
Please try again and if you still have problems, I'll set up a YouSendIt link as well.

Greytech, Midas and BAR all deserve many thanks as well for all the work they put in too in getting this portability project really moving.

I've updated K-Meleon On The Move a little to catch more errors and also to accommodate a problem which arose with Andkon's build - the K-Meleon executable was originally named KMeleon.exe instead of K-Meleon.exe.
So, with both the KMVsetup and KMV programs you can now specify the name of the K-Meleon executable as a command line parameter thus: /Ename
(The default, of course, remains as K-Meleon.exe)

Question: When cloning the install from the HD installation, does the program change the original installation's config files to relative paths, or just the copy's?

Hello Lazyhound,
The original should remain completely untouched, by human hand (or otherwise)!
Only the cloned config prefs are changed to relative paths.

If you find it inconvenient to have to "drill down" through lots of folders to reach the K-Meleon program folder before running KMV.exe (where it must reside), the following tip should help.
Unfortunately Windows doesn't seem to allow relative paths in a shortcut, so this approach is useless for running KMV.exe from a removable drive whose drive letter can vary. However, you can overcome this limitation by creating a little batch file KMV.BAT in (say) the root directory of your removable drive, and running this instead. The following example works for both Win 98 and Win 2K+:
@echo off
cd "\Program Files\K-Meleon"
if "%os%"=="" start "KMV.exe"
if not "%os%"=="" start "" "KMV.exe"
Just make sure that your own particular (relative) K-Meleon program path follows the CD command on the second line.
I hope this is more convenient for some of you.
