K-MELEON BUILDS LIST ~ Discussion and Questions About the List
Posted by:
Carson

Please post your comments of questions about the K-MELEON BUILDS LIST here.
This is to keep the actual LIST as ONLY a list, because there is so much building activity in this forum that it has been hard to keep a nice, clear, clean list of available builds for people who want a list.
So, THIS IS THE THREAD in which you can post all of your comments and queries about the neighbouring K-Meleon List.
If you want to say, "Is this a good build for me to use?" please ask HERE. Thanks a lot. :-)

I thought the Wechselbalg is supposed to be 0.8.2?

Oh, GEE, Everling! I'm still over there making the list, and I've already put a mistake in there! Yup, it's 0.8.2, or 0.8.2+. Oh well <sigh >. Thanks for pointing it out. People might have thought that it took Hao a very long time to get from 1.8.2 to 1.8.b2!! ;-)

w-b or 0.8.2+ = a static 0.8.2 based on GRE 1.8.a2.
some of our team originally wanted to call it 0.83 but were told that that nr. belongs to the official devs and that we may not use it (jsnj friendly explained why - Al was far from friendly about it ; o (.
w-b is a collection of the contse of wiki - we felt that not all have the time to fit some macros in - just before w-b Sebastian re-issued an exe by Monkee Sage and an official 0.8.2 that he had themed
- w-b and what we do now - was heavily inspired by that -
some people oposed and made big fuzz about Sebastians issue then.
Offical 0.8.2 is based on GRE 1.5 and has slightly less features.

I always think we should update our w-b. But it seems that we lost Dorian, who can make really good static build. I remember it is much easier for me to translate 0.8.2+ into Chinese than official 0.9. 0.9 always do some weired things.

Yes but to Your semi statik - that can be updated ; o ) - we did not know at that time.
// Dorian is possibly off line.
his mail accounts are too full & he does not answer to questions.
He created the fastest k-m for most systems (except 4 some win2000)

Nice work Carson. I've just updated the
Links to external resources section of the Wiki based on the information that's here and included a seperate section for the Unofficial K-Meleon Builds and Modifications. Only those builds with permanent homepages are included (sorry Guenter and Fred), but that can be changed if need be if the builds not mentioned can be quaranteed a permanent download link.

thx Al
p. s.
- do not be sorry - no problem here -
- i only have 10 mb of home page space so rapid share must suffice.
- if any one thinks that it is needed or worth it?
- i can do it like clickfish with a permanent link from home page?

Having a permanent page to go to for your builds is definitely a good idea. The builds don't have to be hosted on the same site as the homepage. You could either make a simple webpage on your own webspace and keep it updated with the most current links to your builds on rapidshare, or you could sign up for a blog somewhere and use that as a permanent page with links to your builds.
What's the deal with the k-ninja builds? Are they faster or have special features or something, or is it J.A.B., or ....? (I checked their site, but there's little (if any) info on how k-ninja difers from official KM, or any other build.

@Drahken
Ninja - as far as i remember - simpler layout and less features.
Ninja is more a themed exe not a build.
in Ninja things not often needed are left out.
Mine is also a themed update of k-m 0.9 with GRE to 1.7.7 not a build.
I made it because the 1.7.7 security update had become available @ Mozilla.
and i added mimetypes editor - which is not often needed but
a real pain if You need it and do not have it.
When Walt found a bug in the first issue and said he
liked another editor i changed what was needed.

Just tried Dorians old static KM based on Mozilla 1.8a2. I have to replace the js dll. This version is real quick. It still is as fast as the other versions.
Just want to know how different this version is compared to Wechselbalg ?

Basically the same ( probably earlier exe - i am not absolutely sure -
i think w-b.exe is from late August and slightly smaller
// IMHO all components are interchangeable with w-b - they are at least twins) Dorian made many build runs. I still have several exes.
the differences between that and w-b are:
w-b has joined xpt (in components // less overhead, faster start).
a much smaller chrome made by Jan.
slightly different menues.
a working history.
upxed (exe zipper) exe.
other Skins
the build You mention:
can be easily altered to working history using history from w-b
(You can get history.jar from me if You need it
else You can use w-b chrome which is smaller = faster;
You probably can use the joined xpt of w-b
You can reduce xpt number to needed only by comparing with 0.8.2) .
has still help menue as issued by Sebastian with his themed exes.
(submenue advanced)
Has still skins by Eyes-Only with several throbbers made for him.
(one skin contains throbbers originally intended for w-b issue - in green2b).
that is all i can think of @ the moment
regards

Guenter, "- if any one thinks that it is needed or worth it?
- i can do it like clickfish with a permanent link from home page?"
If you could do it without it being an expense to you - ??? - I'm not sure if that is possible -- I think it would be very good.
I've watched my own use of (previously) Firefox and (now) K-M builds. I often go back later and download again. Sometimes I go back a long time later, to replace a file or else to make a comparison between new and old.
(Firefox claims 50 million downloads now. That is a lot, but it is not 50 million different people. Maybe 10 million--which is still a lot. I myself would be 5 or 10 of those "people", though--and I don't even have Firefox on my computer!)
Anyway, yes--it would be excellent to have Guenter Giants available! :-)
Best regards from a cold, cloudy May morning in Vancouver.

I'm with Drahken and Carson on this. Even just a subpage within your own website with some info on your build and directions for download would do the trick. It doesn't have to be anything too fancy just something people can go on to know a bit more about the version (which Gecko, extra features etc).
If you decide Guenter let us know.

Thanks guenter , with you around I have learned to chop down K-Meleon's parts and substitute it with another version. Just like the Clickfish Gecko eye , Sebastians, Hao and freds built. I was able to test versions in English and substitute Hao's files with Fred and test K-Mel according to what I need. It's a trial and error thing for me and With K-Meleon, I enjoy the learning experience.
Without you guys around, it will not be possible. You guys are great............

my homepage is so small because it belongs to the mail (name & account)
- it is part of my online and telefon bundle with htp -
ok - if You think it is needed
- i have a section on browsers on home page anyway
(praising our browsers capabilty with applets on old pentiums - LOL)
- unconspicuously on the entry page , o )
(but not today ot tomorow)
i am working at an update of home page anyway and will add a paragraph
and a link as soon as i am finished with the page update,
the next update of my themed exe (which i am testing)
(because it is not a build - just a GRE & chrome update & a theme used with w-b)
and a themed francophone exe (by alain) on which Eyes-Only and me are colaborating
(almost finished: le Acadian fait le testing because i do not speak French ; o ) ).

<experimental bump>
Just to keep this thread closer to the Builds List itself. (We'll see how this works.)
-- I think most people use specific threads to their particular build, but this one is good for general or miscellaneous questions and comments. :-)

Here is my latest K-Meleon (gekko-eye) 0.9.624:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.9) Gecko/20050624 K-Meleon/0.9
]http://www.cappoodoo.de/download.php?id=126&s=info
I have tested the newer versions from the 1.7.9 gekko (20050630 and 20050701) and all newer versions do not work any longer correctly with K-Meleon (input fields on web pages are not indicated, and so on).

@ clickfish
In the new geckos 1.7.9 (20050701) etc the res folder has changes.
The "builtin" folder is missing, and form.css and ua.css are changed,
and point to :
chrome://global/content/platformHTMLBindings.xml#inputFields (etc)
instead of :
resource://gre/res/builtin/platformHTMLBindings.xml#inputFields (etc)
as before.
Because this file in chrome is missing, it is necessary to use
the old res folder instead of the new one, then forms and other things
work as before.
Regards Fred

As I have realized, that gklayout.dll in components has been
changed, which seems to point also to chrome://global/content/platformHTMLBindings.xml
for keyboardscrolling and possibly other functions, I preferred
to add platformHTMLBindings to toolkit.jar in chrome.
Then the new res folder can also be used.
It seems to work already here and I will upload soon a new version
1.7.9-modified2 based on Mozilla 1.7.9-20050701 files.
