My about:plugins lists Windows Media Plugin as enabled but when a WM is selected the new window says the player is missing. I reinstalled the plugin to no avail. Any suggestions please?

goto tools/privacy/active x support set check and restart browser -
that should do it.
do not foregt to stop loader if You use it.
if not You found a bug or Your system has a problem - feedback apreciated.

p. s. some ppl here advocated that You must switch this on intentionally.

Other than unexpectedly quitting a couple times I am liking this browser. It renders pages that Opera has problems with very well and seems to be a little faster. I won't even bother to compare it with the now very slow (at least for me) Firefox 1.5. The only thing I really miss is the ability to remember the sessions when exiting.

There is a sessions plugin available for the newer test versions based on SeaMonkey. You could try using one of those... my personal favorite is K-MeleonCCF 0.04 which you can find here:

It's faster than the K-Meleon builds based on the 1.7.x GRE (Fred's builds, Brian Bruns' update, official builds) because it uses the 1.8.x GRE which is a bit faster. The SeaMonkey builds use actual tabs instead of layers. The difference between tabs and layers should be somewhat apparent after a week or so of using the tabbed version.
Give a try, but make sure not to install it over your existing K-Meleon installation.
If you don't like this one, just uninstall it and start using your old one again.

Only npmozax.dll should be necessary.
After installation its name is _npmozax.dll, when you enable
it in Tools-->Privacy-->Permissions-->Active X Support,
it is renamed to npmozax.dll .
Some javascript files have also to be present.

It is an improved npnul32.dll - the plugin indicates when a plugin is missing.

Media player will play if installed on Your pc.

msvcp60.dll & msvcrt.dll where k-m exe is

npmozax.dll in plugins

nsAxSecurityPolicy.js & nsIMozAxPlugin.xpt in components
(Fred did also delete xpti.dat and compreg.dat to force k-m to write them new which registers the 2 files).

npdefpluginpro Is a replacement for the npnull.dll plugin. Both of these plugins are "default" plugins, that means that they activate when the browser needs a plugin but doesn't have the right one. (You know when you go to a site that requires a new plugin and you get that little thing with the netscape logo and it says "click here for the plugin" or some such? That's npnull.dl at work. If you've deleted that crappy plugin and installed npdefpluginpro instead, then you get a colored box which you can right click to get the plugin, or to save the file, or view the file directly, etc.)
These have no effect at all on any other plugins.
