I'm migrating from Ubuntu 12.04 to Xubuntu 16.04 on a machine, and I'll probably do the same for my principal desktop.
I don't like too much Lubuntu, which is faster, but a little tricky, for my use.
You can install wine, it ought not to slow your os.
The only problem I found is that there is no 64 bits build, and wine needs a lot of 32 bits packets. If you use 32 bits linux b
