@james I don't like it! it's what I was referring to "as a workaround to a workaround". I would generate a new html page and display it, make all the entries hyperlinks that open in a new window, that way it's easy to go and load the page and toggle it's permissions. Not sure you can do that without js enabled though! Now that the toggling works, it's almost

@ Fred mmm...no, the link starts kmeleon.exe all right and the URL:HTTP entry looks correct. the problem is that kmeleon itself puts up an alert on startup ( with only a single thread running as well ) that says, "Could not initialize XPCOM. Perhaps the GRE is not installed or could not be found?" However, it starts fine from a shortcut or the .exe itself. If kmeleon is alre

Does this version need a special SetDefault.exe? I used 1.3.1.6 under kernelX, which always worked for KM1.6 derivatives, and it won't start properly from a protocol (http:// link) in other applications, (Kmeleon 1.7) complaining of an XPCOM error and that the GRE is not loaded or something like that. Thanks

wow. does the whitelisting even work? the problems siria reported with it seem to make it not worthwhile. it's like a workaround for a workaround....

as far as I can tell, only spaces work as seperators, it is okay to have multiple spaces, commas don't work at all. this agrees with mozilla documentation. so there is no real issue other than the one you identified, that a pref may be overwritten on startup. but it sounds like you don't really want to post it, and i have no preference, so i am not going to post it. thanks for helpin

well the strings IS a problem, but i don't think most people will ever really need to edit the list, so maybe we should just take that out and leave the options to view the list of sites or clear it completely. The toggling works well now and you can check the menu to see if a site is blocked as well. Try it out It's not that "mini" as it stands. i swear there was an uploa

Version 1.9b of microrss has been released. What is it ?? A compact, simple, RSS feed reader that organzies RSS feeds and loads them, it only takes up about 14K. It will allow podcasts to be downloaded from feeds. New Features for 1.9: - Compatible with Gecko from FF3.6. A minor change was needed to a XUL tag to make the microrss app fill the window(tab) fully. If you are running KM1.7, y

@disrupted re: Flash Control panel I don't remember but I think I tried every option and couldn't get it to run. If someone else succeeds, please post the solution.

@siria I condensed and cleaned it up. It works fine for just blocking a few troublesome sites. Should we upload to macros area? You want to take a look first?

blacklist only would be okay, i just have some sites with annoying JS that doesn't effect their function beyond long load times. you're right, hostperm isn't being used anymore, looks like it's in permissions.sqlite. but it looked like a good place to block a few sites! maybe i can edit an old hostperm file and then use the compat macro to read it in...or edit the sqlite i

Does anyone know how hard would it be to add a whitelist/blacklist control for javascript like the ones for flashblock or even better like the one for cookies, popups and images? where would i edit the code to add this? I know there are some extensions that sort of do this but they are way to big and complicated for what i want to do. looks like they require auto-it which i am not interested in.

The new flash comes with a control panel app that replaces the older global control panel that appeared on a webpage as a flash app itself. I have not been able to get the new control panel app to function in W98 under kernelX. But I have found a workaround: when you attempt to access global settings, you will get a popup that includes the name of the control panel app - search for this on your

press F2 for preferences, there under Browsing is a File Handling dialog. find the entry for pdf and edit it. you will see the possibility of launching it in any program which you can locate on your hard disk, maybe the 3rd option. if you want it to appear embedded in a page, like adobe usually does, you will need a plugin to render it from the new application. good luck with that, hopefully

@siria sorry, i am very sloppy about such things and a laaazzzyyy typist. i meant the X to be pronounced eks as a shorthand saving a whole keystroke in the process. on the other hand it goes good with activeX and directX, now we have kernelX, like a variable kernel ( which is what it is ). @MXB: another must for a W98 computer is Maximus Decims' native USB modification which gets

well, all i have is 800Mhz 256MB RAM and W98SE, flash10 is bigger, but faster than flash 9 in my experience. but the real problem is the vintage of the video card. even mine is a complete joke compared to newer ones, but a surplus premium video card is easy to find and fixes that problem...

it doesn't really "run" as in taking up processor time or anything like that, it just redirects some functions that are present in NT to their W98 equivalents or fabricates data for them so they won't fail. an example, the program wants to know what the prefs for this particular NT user are, well there's really only one user in W98 and it's never an NT user, so it ju

kernelX? nothing to it, small download, works great. only suggestion: only enable for programs that need it, subtle side effects occur when programs that can already run on 98 think they are on XP. post any questions here, we will try to help i highly recommend the version KM 1.6 S 2014 over the beta version. I have found it faster and more stable too.

yes you can change it to IE. That will give you the same page you see now, designed for IE rather than Mozilla, so it won't help you. Just surf as FF like everybody else....

IE6 last working on W98. I like FF except it takes forever to start up. Am now using one of Fred's updated (`1.6 with 2012 SM gecko) working better than 1.6b2 on W98. Fred's 1.7alpha, not working for me. Will try his latest 1.6 this week. I agree with the post about all browsers about equal and memory use, speed and other rumors are mostly hogwash. Biggest choice is startup time, se

It takes the same amount of time to load at bootup as at app start. If KM takes one second to open without preload, it is adding one second to boot time. Windows does not normally start without IE loaded, you could change the shell variable ( at least on 9x machines) to some trivial program and find out how much time it adds to the boot, but most of the shell is not the UI specified in the she

User reports of browser speed are always kind of suspicious. Whenever they load a new one, they haven't had chance to screw it up or had a zillion add-ons put into it. Compared to the old browser ( which they are tired of), yeah , it's faster. Mozilla has definitely been playing catch up on the javascript side of things. but i find it very hard to believe that kmeleon shows any signi

Still it was better than 1.6b. Recommend you update 1.6b to whatever engine was in this build before! Or was it just my imagination ??? I will try the 1.7alpha this week.

Sure that looks fine to me! But the real question is, what does the idiot checking it on the other end think is important? I usually wouldn't spoof beyond the equivalent FF version. but shouldn't need to spoof anyway. There is no - supposed to be in front of Mozilla 5.0 however.

I stopped using abp because of the long load time. It seems to be related to parsing its very complete black list. I bet if you make a black list of just the few most annoying sites, it will be faster. You never notice this on FF, bcuz it takes forever to load anyway....

It was a site with an animated hi-def movie, can't remember it now, but not youtube. some kind of demo for stage video where you can switch the hw accel on and off as you watch. with accel on, black screen behind the rest of the flash, accel off, movie is behind the flash objects. also, i don't think the hw accel in FF4 (what I was using) works in XP, but that's a different issu
