I think we wouldn't have native history unless the brand new kplugin will be coded from scratch again. Old ones are not compatible with new sqlite-database type. So your work is invaluable now. Speaking about text editor, I found AkelPad to be a good choice - small, portable and powerful (even more with plugins).

James, the size of places.sqlite is preconfigured. This is made to avoid fragmentation of database file which slows down the browser. So all the 10Mb are just empty at start. But when at work this file not grows but is populated with history info. Developers hope that such a size would be enough for most users. But I've seen some builds, where places-file is presized at 20Mb.

JuJu, I've looked inside with TotalCommander with Lister plugin Fileinfo 2.0. It says that 2 dependencies of kmeleon.exe call to dwmapi.dll - shell32 and comctl32.dll (hidden deep in the labyrinth of WinSxS folder - I'm sitting under Win7). May be key to the crash is somewhere around this...

Sorry, Dorian, but new exe leads to almost fully non-editable about:config: only switching of boolean settings works. You cannot change INT or STROKE parameters... And like in 1.7 there isn't specific context menu for settings editing.
