@Rocksprecht You are correct about Opera's incompatibility. Just when you begin to like it, it blows up. As to its speed - Tom's Hardware did a test: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/firefox-chrome-opera,2558.html#xtor=RSS-182 and found Chrome still to be champ. Having said that - what these tests don't show is how a browser performs in the long haul, on a daily basis, and w

Some of the more talented programmers are from India. Though, from what I have read, Microsoft seems to do things in large committees with one guy being the "chief architect". The word "chakra" is pretty widely used especially among "new agers" and alternative medicine practitioners. A chakra is focal point for the reception and transmission of energies. You have

You are correct AirSpirit. Dorian plays a real balancing act. He is trying to bring K-Meleon up to the 1.9.x engine and he is facing a tidewater change in operating systems. Clearly, the eye candy is attractive (as in Opera's aero tricks), I do believe, however, that the direction of K-Meleon will be toward efficiency in speed and low resource footprint. Lately, K-Meleon has been a little sl

No one said it didn't run on XP - what was being said is that in the future the features that are now advanced will become standard, and they will not run on XP. How long that will be no one knows. Try running IE9 on XP - that is the future already knocking at the door. If you like the advanced features in Firefox now (speed, etc.), it will bring with it some things that may also make it inc

You are correct - it is quite fast - as is the Seamonkey 2.1a1pre. Firefox is a little heavier on the memory footprint. It remains to be seen what plug-ins will eventually do to it speed-wise. In any case, the real story is that it is coming to a point where even XP will no longer handle them - let alone 98. At present both Minefield 3.7.4 and Seamonkey 2.1a1pre are being set up to work with V

In Netscape a "flag" was the equivalent of "leashing" in IE6. Essentially, it deals with third party cookies on a webpage. Some of these may not be desirable while others are fine depending on the privacy policy for a webpage. In Netscape a little icon appeared in the right corner of the browser as a "flag" at which point you could choose to accept or not accept the

While this is not a problem in K-Meleon at the moment since it is using an earlier "trimmed" Seamonkey 1.1.6 gre, if and when it graduates to what is Firefox 3.5, there will be an interesting phenomenon when downloading files through the mozilla downloader in relation to Zone Identifiers. The file downloaded - be it an .exe or a .zip - will be treated as a security threat by Windows Exp

K-Meleon does run in Vista 64. However, I had some difficulties trying to make it run "locally". Using the installer and allowing it to be installed such that it puts itself in a "Roaming" directory (under users\name\etc.\) allows K-M to work pretty flawlessly. In XP you could unzip it within a subdirectory under, for example, Program Files and run it once, transfer your p

Have been using SeaMonkey beta version 3.1b2 since I bought a Vista operating system. K-M gets along in Vista, but seemingly, not as happily as in XP. Still like K-M for some things, but this newer SeaMonkey works very smoothly.

@BenoitRen - there already are three Alpha versions of Seamonkey 2.0 and the beta1-pre is found on the Nightly builds: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/nightly/latest-trunk/ . I am using the March 24th nightly build and it is entirely stable. Under Vista 64bit, it runs like a mad man. I have yet to have it crash. So, you are probably correct that 2.0 will be out this summer.

Charlie, java is a different thing than javascript. Anyway, click on Edit-Preferences and right above K-Meleon plugins, you should see Javascript. Click on it and make sure that it is enabled. Then, type in about: plugins in the url bar to see whether "Shockwave Flash" is actually installed for you.

Hao, I really appreciate all the work you put into your builds. The earlier series leading to .90 were excellent. But, these last ones have not been as good. In version 2 while the bookmarks are working better, the iconcache seems to be out of sync for some reason. Not a big thing, but a nuisance nontheless. Actually, you never know when it will erase them again or not. None of the password

Copy the bookmarks.dll from Dorian's most recent 1.5 build (found in the kplugins - its about 92k) and overwrite the bookmarks.dll that comes in Hao's install in the kplugins directory. This, at least makes it work with the bookmarks.html file properly. (At least, so far.)

Removing the manifest file does allow it to run (which was the reason I was able to get it to run the first time). However, this causes the favicons to blacken. The difference between this implementation of .91 and the earliest one I downloaded is that I am not now receiving a message that it has crashed. Yet there is something happening when you close the browser. What I observe is that it s

Have all of those files Hao and even put them into the directory where k-meleon.exe is, but it gives me the same error.

The new download (through source forge) gives a windows warning box message that the application failed to initialize properly and then gives a number 0xc0000142.

Can't give this version (0.91) a passing grade. Positive side - it is fast; the skin is very attractive. Negatives - it crashes on exit. The Favicons and the Bookmarks are not being read correctly. Many of the favicons are too dark to see. Not sure that the proxy is working properly (I use it to catch cookies and for some reason it isn't doing so). Because it crashes on exit, especially

My thoughts also, jmillar. Minimize them both, then bring them up and make your measurements. They will either be similar, or K-M will maintain a smaller footprint longer.

Excellent build Hao. One tiny bug. If you change the behavior of the Url bar tab from Open in current tab to Open in new tab, whenever you Download a file, it brings up one of those Dr Watson warnings that something has stepped on Windows toes, ask you to send a report and then kills K-M. That is the only flaw I could find. Thank you.

Type about: plugins in your url bar. If Silverlight 2.0 was installed it will show there. Silverlight 1.0 used npctrl.dll but this was never put in the plugins directory. Silverlight probably uses an association with browsers to know when to run.

I am not sure that we will be using the same terminology. In any event, the "links" bar is what is called "Personal Toolbar Folder" - so if there is a page that you wish to save, click on Bookmarks-Add Page and when the pop-up comes up, type in the name you want to give it, but at the bottom click on the down arrow and choose Personal Toolbar Folder.

All toolbars are accessed the same way - from the Menu. Click on View-Toolbars and a drop down list will come up. Those that you are using will have a checkmark next to them. They can be toggled to appear or disappear by by clicking on a selection.

Thank you Dorian, kko, and others for the upgrade. While you modestly said it only corrected a few bugs, 1.5.1 seems to be on steroids. It is pretty fast. Again, thanks for your hard work.

@caktus - Or you could just take the lazy man's way out. Have two K-M's going simultaneously - one that has everything turned off and one that you use to browse familiar sites. Use different themes to distinguish the two.

If, perchance, the favicon is not showing up in the tab, type about: config into the url bar, then type favicon in the the search bar and change the value of browser.chrome.favicons to true.
