This is an old bug in Mozilla Gecko code. Mozilla Gecko browser not rendering fine images with less than 256 colors (8 bits). I think this is fixed in Gecko 1.9.x. You can try with KM 1.6Beta2 if you use KernelEx for Win9x because browsers with Gecko 1.9.x like KM 1.6Beta2 need Win2K or later, win9x is not supported anymore since Gecko 1.9.x.

What external programs are using to open K-Meleon? This is very strange because the new installer and setdefault work to Win7, this must work for win2K as the 1.5.4 installer and setdefault. Are you sure your user have permissions to modify the registry?

Preloader is an old tool and don't have been updated since a lot of time. Really not increase the load time a lot of, currently is more used to have KM in the system tray bar. Yes it's, I think like JujuLand, you need unzip the jar file and resaved all files as UTF-8 format using Notepad++ for example. And build again the jar file (zip file without compression).
