Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the protocol that allows browsers like K-Meleon to access the web. Tim Berners Lee created HTTP and the web by building Ted Nelson's hypertext concepts onto the existing File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Many modern websites use the more secure HTTPS protocol. HTTPS encrypts all communication using Transport Layer Security (TLS).

If you are using a deprecated version of K-Meleon for Windows 9x, you will only be able to access HTTP sites. There is a patch for Windows 98 that adds TLS support to the latest official version of K-Meleon to support 9x operating systems. There is also an unofficial port of K-Meleon 74 using the Goanna engine for Windows 2000 with updated TLS support.
