An anonymous proxy can increase your anonymity online by routing your activity through a server. It can hide your IP address and your location. Because the proxy routes your data through an external server, it's vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. Be sure to only use a trusted proxy service. A self-hosted proxy like Privoxy can block ads and malicious content from reaching your browser, but won't offer anonymity.

Using a proxy server has several advantages involved including:

  • No learning curve over normal web browsing
  • Anonymity
  • More secure if an authentication scheme is involved

Configuring Your Proxy Settings in K-Meleon

1. Start K-Meleon if you haven't already.

2. You need to find a proxy first. If you already know which proxy you will be using, then go ahead and skip to step 3. You can search for a proxy list to find a free proxy or sign up for a paid service. If possible, find one in your own country.

3. Go to Edit > Preferences (F2) >> Network > Proxy. You should see something similar to the following:

4. Go the web page with your proxy address. Copy the IP address or Name (should look something similar to 223.108.243.27). Paste it into the field directly to the right of HTTP:. Copy the port number and paste it into the Port: box.

5. Click Save and a new tab should appear with your proxy name. Return to the General proxy tab. Choose to use a user-defined proxy configuration. Your new proxy configuration should be the top option in the list.

Extra Info

If, for some reason, your proxy does not work, just follow these steps but use a different proxy server. Remember you get better a better response when the proxy is in your country.
