Search engines

K-Meleon can use any search engine you choose. The most popular search engines are listed on the Search Engines page.

Dictionaries

K-Meleon's spellchecker uses the dictionary format from other Mozilla browsers. Check out the spellchecker page for installation instructions.

Plugins

K-Meleon is one of the last browsers to support third-party plugins. It uses the same NPAPI format that Mozilla, Netscape, and Chrome once used. You can still install plugins to read PDF files in the browser or play vintage flash games although external applications are more secure.

Quicksearch

Quick Search can map any search engine to a bookmark. You can use Quick Search bookmarks from the bookmark menu or toolbar. They're most effective when used with nicknames, K-Meleon's version of a Mozilla keyword. Then you can execute searches directly from the address bar with many websites and search engines. You can add Quick Search bookmarks for many popular websites from the Quick Search page.

Applications

Check out the list of external applications that you can install alongside K-Meleon to get more functionality like text editors, pdf readers, password managers, and download managers .

Stylesheets

User stylesheets allow you to customize how pages display on your device. Check out the stylesheet guide to download custom CSS stylesheets. Instructions for activating stylesheets are also on the stylesheet guide.

Themes and skins

K-Meleon skins (or themes) change the browser's appearance. Unlike in other browsers, K-Meleon skins can set a default layout, modify appearance preferences, and even define which buttons will be available in the browser. Refer to the skinning tutorial for the steps on installing a new theme. There are several places to look for new K-Meleon skins:

  • The Forum is the place to look for newer skins or to ask questions about customizing K-Meleon's appearance.
  • K-Meleon Themes for Version 1.5 will work on versions of K-Meleon up to the current version.
  • The older K-Meleon Themes Wiki page list skins that worked on version 1.1 and will work on newer versions of K-Meleon, although they may need some modifications.
  • The Skins and Throbbers page lists some even older skins from version 0.7. The graphical assets will work on newer versions of K-Meleon, but these skins will require more serious modifications and may lack buttons for some more recent features.
  • The external K-Meleon resources page has links to skins and themes pages located throughout the web.

Translate K-Meleon

You can download translated versions of the K-Meleon menus from our Localization resource section. That is also the place where you should find links and pointers to help you localize the Mozilla part of K-Meleon.

Customize K-Meleon

Much of K-Meleon's behaviour can be altered through the PreferencesDialog. Even more can be altered by editing the UserJS or UserContentCSS files directly. These files are read by the Mozilla/Gecko rendering engine. Further information is available in the following documents:

Menus, accelerator keys, and toolbar buttons are kept in the ConfigFiles. You can edit these files in any text editor. Beginners should use caution when editing these files and it is helpful to create a test profile for extensive customization. It is strongly advised to make a backup copy of these files before editing so that you can undo changes.
