Open Word document in browser

Hi

I am using K-Meleon as a CD browser (as does UbuntuLinux and TheOpenCD). Links to PDF files load in the bowser, but links to word documents open a Save As... dialogue box.

Where can I change this behaviour so that clicking on the link opens MS word within the browser window in order to display the document?

Thanks
Brendon

I don't think K-meleon can handle word documents.

If the Mimetypes Editor in your version is working,
you can define for example the free Microsoft Word Viewer
to open Word documents, without being vulnerable to
macro viruses, as Word Viewer can not execute macros.
If the MimeTypes editor of your version does not work,
edit it in another version, where it does, and copy then
the file mimetypes.rdf from this profile folder to the
other version s profile folder. You can also use a
mimetypes.rdf from a Firefox folder, if a program for word
documents has been defined there. or try to edit your
mimetypes.rdf manually. It concerns the application

Good luck

Hmmm. Thanks for the ffedback. I am still very much in the dark. My K-Meleon loads pdf files using the acrobat reader inside the browser window, but just triggers a "Save" for Word documents. My difficulty is that neither PDF or DOC mimetypes are specifically listed in my RDF file. Help!

Here is my RDF...

<?xml version="1.0"?>

<RDF:RDF xmlns:RDF="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#";
xmlns:NC="http://home.netscape.com/NC-rdf#">;

<RDFconfused smileyeq about="urn:mimetypes:root">
<RDF:li resource="urn:mimetype:application/launcher"/>
</RDFconfused smileyeq>
</NC:MIME-types>
</RDFgrinning smileyescription>

<RDFgrinning smileyescription about="urn:mimetype:externalApplication:application/launcher"
NC:prettyName="Launcher"
NC:path="Launch.exe" />

<RDFgrinning smileyescription about="urn:mimetype:handler:application/launcher"

@Brendon Hatcher

Try to add thes lines. Adapt to your program (here it's for OpenOffice)

I dont know if you can place it where you want. I take it in this order, but separated by other lines.

<RDFgrinning smileyescription RDF:about="urn:mimetype:externalApplication:application/msword"
NC:path="C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\program\soffice.exe"
NC:prettyName="soffice.exe" />
....
<RDFgrinning smileyescription RDF:about="urn:mimetype:application/msword"
NC:value="application/msword"
NC:editable="true"
NC:description="Word docfiles"
NC:fileExtensions=".doc">
<NC:handlerProp RDF:resource="urn:mimetype:handler:application/msword"/>
</RDFgrinning smileyescription>

But it would be easier with mtypes ...

A+

Well, it's been over a year now since anyone replied on this post, but it's very interesting for me.

Did you ever figure out how to get a Word / Excel / powerpoint document to open within the browser (instead of the "Save As" option)?

I think it can be done server-side with OpenOffice products, where a user goes to a web site and clicks on an icon of a Word document and it opens in the browser with having to download to the client. The user can edit and save all within the browser.

Any examples of how to make this work with OpenOffice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
A

In IE this is possible for a M$ plugin.
I think that you must serach a similar plugin for Mozilla/SeaMonkey/FireFox that run equal than the plugin of Words documents for IE. If this exist will be easy to adapted for worked with K-Meleon.

Luck.
