I've just seen K-Meleon 1.6.0 beta needs the VS2005 Redistributable pack?
That means the OS requirements climb from Win95 to Win2K!?
No Win98 or NT4 anymore, :-(.
This was one of the main advantages for me to use K-Meleon:
Low-End PC have an old OS installed, and K-Meleon ran with old Win OSs up to now ...

No.

The basic Problem of legacy OS support/features

Moving to Mozilla GRE 1.9.x means that K-Meleon must meet its OS functions requirements. K-Meleon simply does not have the manpower and financial resources to keep the GRE 1.8 bugs updated/fixed. Apart from that You'd need to develop HTML 5 support for it too.

The main problem is not the runtimes of the VS2005 Redistributable pack, which are shipped with the portable K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta_en-US.7z and the K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta_en-US.exe by default.

p.s. Einmal erst reingucken, ehe man ne Schippe zieht? Mein Vorschlag.

Some Tools for System Backup in Win9x

A great how 2 by Duffy98: For 9x Users Only Using K-Meleon ...

Find other 9.x users that run K-Meleon 1.6beta

Please. Also look into the thread about users that run K-Meleon 1.6 beta with Win98

p.s. Erst alle Infos lesen dann posten. Alte Usenet Weisheit.grinning smiley

There are several other threads and posts about problems and solutions for K-Meleon 1.6/1.7 under Win9.x with kernelX.

AFAIK NT4 supports the needed OS features. Correct me if I am wrong. You only have to get around the install problems that MS likes to build into their re-distributable package.

This is no development but a support question. I will move this thread to General
where it gets more attention.

K-Meleon 1.6 beta DOES run under (my updated) win98se! grinning smiley
Despite it being based on the gecko engine 1.9.x, which Mozilla develops only for modern machines now. But just like FF3 it can be made to work with KM1.6, though not completely perfect ;-) Occasional crashes and here and there a minor bug in beta version...

The catch is, it doesn't run on the pure original version of win98, you first need to add certain unofficial system updates (KernelEx, 200kcool smiley, which should be done with caution, and not from bloody beginners (but frankly, which win98 user today doesn't use that system for years meanwhile?? tongue sticking out smiley)
And a few people say it messed their system (with an earlier KernelEx-version), therefore strongly recommended to do a system backup before trying

Here's some info HOW it worked for me, and a few additional tips:

Wondering, perhaps that link should be made a sticky...? Looks like every week someone else posts the same question now ;-) On the other hand, too many stickies may get confusing too, no idea...

Hab doch gar nischt gesagt wegen ip *unschuldigbin* ;-)

Hmm, diese "Überschrift" fände ich weniger irreführend: "Some Tools for System Backup in Win9x".

Danke. Ändere in "Some Tools for System Backup in Win9x".

more accurately & importantly, siria, KM 1.6.x won't run under pure versions of Win98 & WinME as they both require the latest versions of KernelEx to get KM 1.6 working under them. I'm using a dual-boot machine with WinXP on the main hard drive and WinME on the second hard drive. remember that WinME is kinda like Win98 3rd edition though that one removes access to pure DOS mode when booting ME.

The recomendation for old systems is update to Win2000, WinXP or WinFLP.

If you can't updated then try to use KernelEx.
