Yes, I'll be releasing a minor update for v2.0 PE as Fulvio reported a usability problem he's been having in the K-Ninja Talk! forum. Other than that I might add in a couple of extra items to improve usability and do a simultaneous release of v1.0.x with it (keeping up the tradition). So later today for those releases.

K-Ninja Samurai v1.0.5 / K-Ninja v2.0 Preview Edition 4

Hey guys,

Ok this weekend's releases are now available for download from: http://geocities.com/grenleef/download.html

Nothing major, just some bug & usability fixes as reported by K-Ninja users, and whatever applicable changes made in v2.0 have been backtracked to v1.0.5. I've also added in a new hotkey combo to run STP MP3 Player: Alt + N, which whilst I was in the process of doing spotted another bug where the STP menu entry was bunko; it is now fixed in v2.0. ALT + N will also work in v1.0.5.

Also a new GRE Update is available for K-Ninja Samurai v1.0.x users, this one is based on Mozilla v1.7.13 nightly 20060617. As always follow the directions on the pack. ;-)

Usual procedures apply when installing these new versions: back up existing themes, profiles, uninstall previous version(s), make sure that the C:\Program Files\K-Ninja\ folder is empty for v1.0.x, and c:\Program Files\K-Ninja2\ as well as C:\Documents & Settings\Application Data\K-Ninja\ for K-Ninja v2.0 PE testers, and then install the new version(s). All going well this should eliminate any profile related problems occuring.

The next release I'm thinking about will be probably v1.1 of K-Ninja Samurai, and I will more than likely move it up to the (at the time) current Mozilla v1.7.13 nightly GRE, as it has been about two months since v1.7.13 was released. After that GRE Updates will continue as usual.

As always have fun, and don't forget to report back on issues you may have, or features you'd like to see in K-Ninja, in the K-Ninja Talk! forums: http://pub35.bravenet.com/forum/2994087922/

I'm just waiting for confirmation on a couple of download mirrors (the usual ones which I use) so I can alleviate the download problems from Yahoo. Every time I do a new release I submit the files for appraisal by a couple of freeware websites which in turn provide the mirrors. If they haven't got back to me by tomorrow then I'll put them up on Rapidshare temporarily.

Still I didn't expect such a demand for K-Ninja, I might have to up my Geocities plan to the next level to satisfy the demand.

The files are downloading OK after a quick check from my end this morning, plus I just got confirmation on the download mirrors for v1.0.5, so there won't be any need for me to put the files on Rapidshare. I'll be putting the link for the download mirrors up soon on the downloads page:

I have used the Ninja off & off.

@Al Elsewhere thou sayeth that thou shalt continue to support Win98/ME. Shazam! I am switching to Ninja exclusively.

Here's an alpha-status OS I'm watching closely ...
http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/index.html

I tried to register for the ReactOS forum, but their registration process stumped me. Does anyone know what you're supposed to enter when you reach the "Code Validation"/"Identify Code" part of ReactOS's registration process? (If it's some sort of IQ test, it's obvious -- I fail).

Thanks. K-Ninja will always be free to those who want it, and I will ensure that their is always a viable, usable version for Win9x users, for as long as is possible.

Some forums send out an email so they can verify that the email address you supplied is legit or not, and the code *may* be contained in that very email itself. Personally I think forcing people to use a legit email address is a little intrusive, but hey each to their own. ;-)

Which version of K-Ninja are you using? Also do ensure that Flash Player is installed properly by typing about:plugins into the URL address bar, and then scroll down the page to find out if it is installed or not.

flash, java ... any Netscape-type-plugin:

if not listed in about:pluhins or not working when You are sure to have installed,
make sure that the player, or java dlls are copied into k-m plugins folder
(the same with any other Gecko or Opera or ... IE 5.5 or lower without updates).

On some systems k-m, Mozilla et cetera do only recognize dll present in that folder.
A k-m that does not recognize a plugin in its own Netscape plugins folder is brocken & must be reinstalled.

Some gaming sites are notorious for failing or gobling up resources and crashing
browser under DOS based Win32.

A good way to get a good collection of not so resource hungry plugins going and configured for any browser that can use that type of plugin is to install an old Netscape 7.1 or 4.8 and copy over the inside of plugins folder to k-m plugins folder
( it is a trick for any browser that uses Netscape plugins)

Sorry to hear that the forums there have problems - greetings

I visited the K-ninja website & tried to use one of the free web buttons listed at...
http://www.geocities.com/grenleef/rogues.html

However, the images use png which I don't use because my 12 websites get numerous visitors from overseas using browsers that cannot handle png.

The Microsoft write-up at...
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/assistance/ha010563051033.aspx

...shows that jpeg & gif are the preferred images for use on FRIENDLY websites. It further states the disadvantages of png.

Sorry, Al, but I just don't see the purpose of being off the beaten track if you want people actually to use those web buttons. It's your decision but -- I pass. yawning smiley(

Your comment about the Microsoft article is misleading, because the article does not mention anything about "friendly" sites, nor even imply that PNG is unfriendly. It mentions two disadvantages of PNG: "fewer browsers currently support it (although it is quickly gaining support)", and "it does not support animation", but only the first one is relevant here.

Note that I'm not saying anything about whether PNG is good (although, to be fair, there are advantages of PNG not mentioned in the article) or whether K-Ninja ads should use PNG.

@rmn- I said that the M$ article SHOWS that jpeg & gif are the preferred images. The word "shows" wasn't intended to connote an actual quotation. I meant that that the main thrust of the M$ article indicated to me that jpeg & gif are usable by more browsers, which I interpret as being "friendlier."

My websites draw a goodly number of visitors from nations where many are still at 28.8 speed, & browsers do not handle png.

Still, your comments are well taken. I did exaggerate a bit. Even so, I wish Al would use gifs or jpegs, so I can post the Ninja icon with a good probability that it will be visible to all & sundry.

Yep, I probably would also use GIF for web buttons, which usually don't need a lot of colours and don't need alpha transparency.

Sorry guys just catching up after a protracted interstate work contract. The web buttons can be easily converted to GIF or JPEG by using IrfanView or a similar program, you just have to open up the image and resave it as *.gif or *.jpg. I will in the meantime convert the images and re-ad them to the Rogues page in a couple of different formats if PNG is not preferred.

Thanks bellgamin. The only problem with going away for work like that is returing and having to spend half a day catching up on everything in relation to K-Ninja. ;-p

Anyhow it look's like some people have been busy spreading the word, so along with some alternative file formats for the K-Ninja web buttons, I've also added some new links to K-Ninja listings that the users have informed me about. It also look's like there's some things to be fixed, and others to be added so some new K-Ninja versions will be done in time for this weekend. Ah work, it never ends. ;-)

New K-Ninja web buttons are available now:

K-Ninja v2.0 Preview Edition 5

Heads up for all those currently beta testing K-Ninja v2.0. Preview Edition 5 is now available for download, and this time to avoid Yahoo! server problems, I've also included it on a mirror download site as well.

Sample changes include:

* Based on K-M v1.0 RC2 ~ Rendering Engine: Gecko v1.8.0.5
* Upgraded STP Mp3 player to newer version
+ Numerous usability fixes as reported by K-Ninja users in the K-Ninja Talk! forums.

K-Ninja v2.0 PE5 download locations are here:
http://geocities.com/grenleef/download.html

Backwards maintenance will occur where applicable and K-Ninja v1.1.0 will be released shortly as well. Stay tuned...

K-Ninja Samurai v1.1

As promised K-Ninja Samurai v1.1 has now been released.

Notable changes:
* Rendering Engine is now Gecko v1.7.13 nightly 20060706 (6th July 2006)
* STP Mp3 player now updated to newer version
+ Some more annoyances/bugs squashed thanks to K-Ninja user feedback in the K-Ninja Talk! forums.

GRE Updates will of course continue on a semi-regular basis, plus periodically the GRE for future versions will be updated as deemed necessary.

K-Ninja Samurai v1.1 can be downloaded from here:

K-Ninja v2.0 final now shipping. Built for speed & comfort!

Finally after what seems like an eternity beta testing and fixing, I'm happy to announce that K-Ninja v2.0 is now available for mass appreciation and downloading. I'd just like to extend my gratitude and thanks to those who have helped out with suggestions, bug reports and just general input with the Preview Editions which have evolved into the Gold Edition of K-Ninja v2.0. Cheers guys.

As most of you should know by now, K-Ninja v2.0 is based upon the latest Gecko Rendering Engine available from Mozilla, v1.8.0.5, which in ways makes it slightly more advanced than the latest publicy consumable Firefox versions available from Mozilla.org.

K-Ninja v2.0, due to numerous changes in the way preferences are edited and stored, means that it is not a straight "upgrade" of version 1.1, in fact it is instead designed to run alongside a v1.1 install, in it's own directory with it's own configuration files. You can choose to have both version 1 and version 2 installed, especially as version 1 will still continue to be maintained indefinately, or you can uninstall whatever previous version of K-Ninja you have, and just fly solo with v2.0 alone. As part of the K-Ninja guarantee, the choice is yours.

Further to this guarantee, there will always continue to be a viable and usable version of K-Ninja for those users of Win9x legacy OS versions. Discussion of abandoning these Windows versions is banned from the K-Ninja Talk! forums.

Themes and skins will also always be updated, and new skins are always guaranteed, as my first line of calling is one of a themer. In this respect K-Ninja will always be the envy of many other similar web browser, especially those without active skinners & themers.

Anyhow folks enjoy this new version of K-Ninja. Download links are available from the K-Ninja website.

cheers,
Al.

Al,

I have a great admiration for what you've done with K-Ninja - the minimal but fast philosophy offers users a real choice along with "vanilla" K-M 1.0. But could kprofile.dll be used with K-Ninja, along with profile.ini, to create a truly portable version for those of us who are USB flash drive freaks? The whole K-Ninja concept seems to lend itself to the idea, but writing profiles to %AppData% and the Windows registry doesn't!

Would be happy to help out / share ideas on this if it could be achieved.

Douglas,

From recollection there was one person (posting in the K-Ninja Talk! forums) who was interested in a portable style K-Ninja, and as I was/am sometimes limited for time I didn't get a chance to investigate it further for him. At the moment like you say K-Ninja writes to the %AppData% directory for profiles, so there would have to be a way of circumventing that. Other than that the registry is only written to by the installer, so avoiding that one is easy.

I'll have a think about it and get back to you soon.

Thanks Al,

I appreciate that all of this takes time which I'm sure you can't afford. What you've set up so far with K-Ninja and the website/forums in such a short time is pretty incredible!

When you released v2 and moved to the GRE 1.8x, I thought that using kprofile.dll instead of profile.dll might be possible. But I just don't know how much Dorian had to tinker with the 1.0 executable, etc to get it working.

There have been about 500 downloads of Pocket K-Meleon 1.0 in less than 2 weeks, so although only one person raised the portable issue in your forums, there could be quite a potential boost to K-Ninja's popularity.

Al,
I can never get Multisearch to work on 1.8x vesions.
I have tried Win 9x and Win 2000. All I ever get are
Google results. Where are the other search engines?
If I am to have only one search engine I would rather
it be http://www.scroogle.org instead of google. Is
there something I am doing wrong? Thanks Al

Also I wanted to post here instead of in K-Ninja
forums to address this. Douglas you are correct.
I know many who are interested in a Pocket
K-Ninja. As with most things the one request
probably represents many hundreds who are
interested. So her is another to add many
hundreds more to the list. So how about a
Pocket K-Ninja?

Aha, lok's like another minor bug that needs to be adressed, thanks for mentioning it. Also I'll take into consideration your suggestion about Scroogle.

As for Pocket K-Ninja, in a couple of days I'll be posting something for Douglas to have a play around with. If all goes well then Pocket K-Ninja may well be a reality.
