@J.G.

No sense to force browser to solve tasks of OS. You can always control what you want when using EFS file system (on Windows, as example). You can encrypt a single folder or entire disk, as well as removable drives (or separate folders on them, yes it is necessary to format them in NTFS). You can also use any cryptographic software (freeware including). Can't see there's any problem.
...
So I just don't understand, what you don't like. The advantage is that nothing is imposed, but it certainly requires a certain set of skills or desire to solve your problem.

And Yes, portable program has numerous advantages. Moreover, it can be turned into a stationary one by a simple pair of operations, so that there may be "difficulties" only for very novice users (although they should have liked the portable concept).

@Carl-Robert, KM2005

Configure accel.cfg can be in different ways. There's a lot of room for imagination.
LButton = openLinkInNewTab as an example, it will force all links to open in new tabs (but for authorizations and web-forms you need to use keyboard).

or

RButton = openLinkInBackgroundTab in addition to menu, the right mouse button will open links (as tabs) in the background. You can set as you like. These are just some examples.

For details, see: http://krypton.x10host.com/lizard/commands.html

By the way, it is possible to write a macro that will alter all links on page so that they themselves are opened in new tabs or windows, but this is not a very rational solution.

I have no problem at all with profiles, I only provided my opinion about @cdlvcdlv profile question. I have no problem with portable KMeleon neither, only remark that KM profile manager for portable devices is useless. Indeed, profile protection is not a question of Windows OS but the browser itself. It's nonsense that the browser is able to create, delete and rename users profiles and then it's completely UNABLE TO PROTECT THEM. Obviously a design problem, anything else. Furthermore, Firefox and Chrome are able to protect their profiles, including portable profiles, with extensions and workarounds:

You can always create few TrueCrypt containers for each copy of browser+profile (probably easiest workaround now for maximum privacy).

So I wouldn't stress about the default accelerators, they are good for what they were designed for and that is tab-less browsing using only windows. Possibly if want to really confuse users, could have the accelerators change depending if the person has tabs enabled or not.

Oh yeah, that would be even more confusing smiling smiley
But considering that nearly all people nowadays use tabs, I'd still vote for FF-hotkeys as default.
Of course, what KM really needs would be an easy GUI for customizing those shortcuts. Changing them is not very complicated really, except that hardly anyone is aware how to. The best chance for many years is finding it in the FAQ, but here in the forum even that link is missing yet in the green sidebar.

An improvement would already be to add that MouseAccel menu also in Edit>Configuration, and perhaps in the Link context menu. And its little submenu should also contain a link to commands.html with the info table. That would probably be easy just by little modifications to accel.kmm macro.
Ideally it should even help to find the single accels config, but that gets already more complicated.

Ok, i am wanting to try out the latest release, but i'm not a developer or a programmer, i use K-Meleon (old stable release) to play Forge of Empires as the game runs best on that browser, i downloaded the .7z archive, and am confused on how should i install it, if and how to patch it to your latest weekly updates, and if i should overwrite the old stable release with this release .... a .exe installer for the newbies who just want to play games with this browser would be great, and a automatic update option

@KronikPillow

Recall previous answers: (posted by roytam1)
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253,144096#msg-144096
and
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,146040,146387#msg-146387

And let me remind a couple of tips: automatic update is evil : )
They are harmful for stable configurations.
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253,146793#msg-146793
and (@Anixx)
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253,144119#msg-144119

The browser in its current form is a portable application that stores everything in its folder. If you not used advanced manual configuration (with editing of individual files), you just need to remove one folder or unpack another version. This is an undeniable advantage, not a disadvantage.

Remember that you can use more than one KM in parallel (if you start with -new parameter).

Roytams newest package is always here, and it's complete, no additional patches needed:
https://o.rthost.win/kmeleon/

The 7z-packages (if they contain a file profile.ini) are portable, no setup or installation needed.
Please do NOT update your old version immediately, instead simply unzip the new one into an own, new folder. That's all!
Then both versions can happily co-exist and don't know of each other.
Your old version and profiles will not be affected by trying out another version, as long as you keep that "profile.ini" file inside, which is telling KM to create its profiles inside its own program folder.

The only catch:
If you unzip it into a location which is write-protected, it probably can't create new profiles in there. In that case read this:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,146455,146488#msg-146488

If some time later, after trying it out, you decide to keep the new version, and want to copy over your customized stuff and extensions, that is the point when things get a bit more complicated.

To copy over your old profile contents, run the old version again and click Edit>Configuration>Profile Directory
This opens the windows file explorer. Delete the folder "StartupCache" and copy all other files and folders.
Run the new KM, click the same menu, delete the "StartupCache", and paste inside your old files.
Be aware, in KM the profile folder does not hold all customized stuff, only most settings, bookmarks, etc. What's stored elsewere, shattered across the program folder, is toolbars-config and extensions...

Consume a lot of memory.

You can disable by about:config, see https://www.techperiod.com/disable-plugin-container-exe-process-firefox/

But remember, once plugin-container.exe is disabled, plugin will run within browser directly, if plugin crashes, browser will also crash as well, and memory consumption is almost the same as browser+plugin-container.exe

Am slightly shaken to read in that article, that *addons* are plugins too??
A completely alien thought, and now riddling if they can be accidentally blocked, and how.

@Shiro
- strange yeah. Could it be those prefs are ignored? But you use an outdated version (76RC2), perhaps in roytam's current build with a much newer engine it's already fixed?
- the article explains how to disable plugin-container completely, by removing the exe (I guess renaming would do too) But if it doesn't even exist anymore, how can it show up in your screen? Perhaps needs another restart or new profile?

Edit later:
plugin-container discussion was continued in own topic (with surprising solution!)
Go here: http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,147592
