Hello all, been a while, but I figured I'd let you know I've made an updated version of my GRE update to K-Meleon 0.9 available:

This is based on 1.7.9 beta build as of 6-24-2005. Please remember that you must have an existing stock version of K-Meleon 0.9 installed for this to work correctly (or, you can update over my older version if you've used my older 1.7.8 updater before). There is no uninstall of the update.

The only thing I never quite figured out was what to call my trusty Original, after it had been converted to your 1.7.8. I eventually branded it as

K-Meleon 0.9 {1.7.8 /bb}

or, the long name for this new one would be:
K-Meleon 0.9 {1.7.9 /bb} Jan 17, June 28-05

[When I was a kid those initials BB invited their own kind of browsing with world renowned glamour all their own. ;-) ]

Heh. Usually, internally whenever we make mods to a program, we give it a /SOSDG-VERSIONNUM (ie: K-Meleon 0.9 (1.7.9/SOSDG-v1.0). SOSDG == The Summit Open Source Development Group, my group that I do most of the dev work for.

But, its your call. I usually make mine pretend to be Firefox so stupid sites that look for Firefox in the string rather then checking Gecko version pick me up correctly.

Excellent work and very much appreciated. This little update helps me out in an internet cafe where I ahve convinced the owner to use KM 0.9 because of the problems he has been having with IE/OE.

After install is this browser info page supposed to say 179 oar 178?

which is AFAIK = 24.06.05

At least they are on this end.
When this was downloaded to 1st computer seems like it said 179.
It now says 178 every time.
So in layman's terms please what can be done? And is it installing
179 or 178?

If your still seeing 1.7.8, then check and make sure that your user agent string is set correctly. Also, check the necko*.dll files in Components. If you check the version tab in properties, check the File Version string, it will say 1.7.9.

use a more complete update - Brian offers a minimal update.

IMHO- Fred will issue a complete update to 24.06.05 soon

I am not having any luck getting the upgrade to show up. In the HELP - ABOUT K-MELEON I still see 1.7.8 I have dowloaded both files listed earlier in the thread. They are the same according to the Fc command. I just clicked on them to run. Is that right? My necko.dll and necko2.dll files have version 1.7.20050.51207. Where is this user agent file or string?

The same problem as James here:

Can't for the life of me figure why you can't get Brian's update to GRE 1.7.9 to work. Of all the various updates to the original K-Meleon 0.9 GRE 1.7.5, this is the one that never fails me.

I have a couple questions for you and then I hope others who know more than I will step in on this one.

First question. What OS are you using? (I'm using W98se).

Second questions. Your normal K-Meleon install. It should be:

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon.

That is the destination that Brian's little executable absolutely requires.

Finally, if that fails, then perhaps I can email his executable that worked on my system to you on the faint hope that that will make a difference.

James and John's inability to use Brian's little executable to upgrade an original K-Meleon 0.9, GRE 1.7.5 install is baffling to me.

Can't figure out WHY this is happening. If it was only one, I'd say just a fluke, but two is worrisome.

Any ideas?

And sorry, but I'm not stupid yet, I know where the executable is decompressed to by default, but you can say it where to decompress I deleted the 2 .dat files that I read in other threats about update the GRE and it still doesn't work.

No, is not your executable or mine is something like the full update instead this minimal, where is that one?

if the files of the 24. 06. 2005 have overwritten the old files
the update succeded - no matter what Your about: page says.

for a full update You can best use Freds newest K-Meleon0.9-1.7.9-modified2.exe.
That is a update to GRE 1.7.9 from yesterday!

Install to a place other then Your normal location!
Then copy over to Your k-meleon all files that are of 01.07 2005 or 02.07. 2005
in root, components, plugins, chrome (toolkit jar), greprefs, ipc, res.
(componets folder: best delete the old one and copy his folder in place because then You do not have to worry about the recent changes/updates in the xpt,
the folder res is also best totally replaced)

practically all files that are common to all Geckos browsers are replaced.

the folders kplugins, skins, defaults/profile and Your used Profiles folder are not touched or updated.

Complete Chrome update can be done;
Fred uses 1.7.8 - that is the newest available.
the files in chrome called en-us.jar, en-win.jar and US.jar are not replaced if You use for example a German, French, Chinese, Spanish or other translated version of k-m.

the rest can be replaced with the newer files from Freds chrome.
If You use an English browser You could replace all.
but You always keep Your own old installed-chrome.txt .
after an update of chrome the folder overlayinfo (can be a file also in some k-m , = called overlayinfo.rdf) and the file chrome.rdf must be deleted (k-m writes new ones then) for the update to take effect.

The size of the update exe file is 8.38 KB (8,583 bytes). Is that right size?
Do I have to put the update exe file in K-Meleon before I double click on it?

kmeleon-geck179-update.exe has 485.006 bite here.
it is the minimal update and will automatically install into English default location
- no matter where it is started.

If Your k-m is at another place You can guide the install to it in the normal way.
else You can install at default position and copy it into place.
(the later gives You a chance to see better what is repaced and done - i prefer that)

the update will overwrite the files that are old and can be security hazards.

The update file is over 400k, not 8.3k, so you probably have a partial download which will not do the trick.

You do not have to have the update file in the K-meleon folder. Just click on it wherever it is in your hard drive (probably your download folder) and it will look for the K-meleon files in the default c:\program file\k-meleon. It will install to all the PROPER sub-folders and the next time you boot up, you'll have a KM GRE 1.7.9.

I got it now. Looks like the problem was in my Star Downloader program. That would only get a 8k file. I did the save link as and got the 400k file. Loaded right up and now the product version of necko.dll is 1.7.9: 2005062406

I have no idea why the Star Downloader did not get the whole program.

Followup about using Star Downloader for the 1.7.9 update file. I had version 1.42 of Star and I have just upgraded to the 1.44 version. The 1.44 version did download a 400k file.

Good we figured this out

Reason why I put out the minimal update is basically to provide the bare stuff necessary to update the engine and components that need fixing (in 1.7.9 I included updated image rendering DLLs that gecko uses out of the recommendation of a friend of mine). Doesn't change anything else out of concern that it may break K-Meleon specific files.

Glad to hear you got Brian's little executable upgrade downloaded O.K. As for the downloader program, I tried Starloader and a few others. The recent integration of Wackget on the right-click mouse has been the winner for me. I like being able to download using Wackget on a right-click or the plain vanilla K-Meleon downloader using a left-click on the mouse (or touchpad, in my case).

The instructions are here in the forums and can be recalled with a search and also in the Wiki, but if you need them, just hollar and I'll cut and paste them into a message here.

Is there even the remotest possibility this would work on other browsers,
i.e. Beonex, older opera versions, etc? If not then any idea where to find
something for them? It seems that Beonex will never be updated for
windows. Opera versions in the 7 series are preferable for some users
