NOTE: Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft and has significant unpatched security vulnerabilities. This community installer is not officially supported by Microsoft or K-Meleon. Use caution connecting to any network with Windows 9X systems.
This installer will install K-Meleon 1.5.4 (one of the last versions to support Windows 98) with Roytam's Transport Layer Security (TLS) patch. Most web browsers designed for Windows 9X systems did not support TLS and cannot access modern sites using the HTTPS protocol. The installer supports Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, Me, and 2000. Windows XP and later are supported in the current version of K-Meleon.
You can visit the forum for more information about the TLS patch, or read the release notes for details about K-Meleon 1.5.4.
The original Windows 95 common control 32-bit library (Comctl32.dll) had several bugs that will prevent applications, including K-Meleon, from running. Before running K-Meleon, you will need to update Comctl32.dll to version 5, which Microsoft distributed with Internet Explorer (IE) 5 and IE 5.5. If you already have the IE update, K-Meleon should start up with functioning toolbars. If the browser does not start or does not have functioning toolbars follow the steps below:
cd\ cd windows cd system ren Comctl32.dll Comctl32x.txt ren something_else.dll Comctl32.dll win
Getting online in Windows 95 is different than other operating systems. The internet had not truly taken off when Windows 95 was released and you'll find that it's much simpler even in Windows 98 by comparison. If you do not already have it on your system, you will need the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) 1.4 upgrade. You can download DUN 1.4 from WinWorldPC.com to enable the connection. If you are installing on a virtual machine, you may also need patches to compensate for Windows 95's inability to run on faster machines.
K-Meleon will not run on i386 class processors. The compiled binary requires "cmpxchg" comparison instructions. Intel introduced cmpxchg with their i486 processors. To run K-Meleon on earlier processors you will need to replace several libaries with legacy versions from the development thread. To replace the libraries for a 386 processor:
For Windows XP and up, you can use the current K-Meleon releases. If you are testing 1.5 or the community installer on a modern version of windows, you should:
