Here you'll find programs that are separate from K-Meleon. These applications can be useful when used alongside the K-Meleon browser. These programs are all managed externally. The developers of K-Meleon do not endorse or support any of the software listed below.

All software listed can be used free of cost. All open-source software is described as free or open-source. Proprietary software that can be used at no cost is described as freeware or freemium depending on the distribution model.


Email and RSS

NewsFox

NewsFox is the default RSS/Atom feed reader in K-Meleon. The latest version of NewsFox for K-Meleon can be obtained from the NewsFox project website.


Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a free and open-source email and RSS client maintained by Mozilla. If your web-based email provider uses a javascript-heavy site. You can use Thunderbird for email. K-Meleon can open any email address link directly into Thunderbird.


Tools

Notepad2

Notepad2 is a direct replacement for the standard Windows Notepad. It will take Notepad's place in the start menu and the right-click "Edit" option. It's simple but offers syntax-highlighting and better undo features than the standard text editor for Windows. It will make editing K-Meleon's configuration, style, and macro files smoother. Notepad2 is open-source software and runs natively on Windows XP.


Notepad++

Notepad+ + is an open-source text editor for Windows. Notepad+ + supports code highlighting, tabs, auto-saving sessions, macros, and a powerful plugin language. Many components of K-Meleon including its configuration and macro files can be directly edited in a text editor like Notepad+ +.


qBittorrent

qBittorrent is a free and open-source BitTorrent client. It is lightweight, secure, and available for many platforms. It includes RSS support, a search engine, and plugin support for customization. It is actively developed and receives regular security updates. Unlike freeware clients, qBittorrent is free of ads.


KeePass

KeePass is a free password manager available for many platforms. It supports 256-bit encryption for security, compression to reduce size, secure password generation, many import/export formats, and 2-factor authentification. It will automatically detect K-Meleon, even with the portable installation.


Cookie Monster

A tool to manage cookies. You simply set up the cookies you want to keep and the others are deleted upon exit of K-Meleon when used in a macro. Macros and toolbars for Cookie Monster in K-Meleon are archived here:

Mozilla Cookies View

Mozilla Cookies View is an alternative to the standard 'Cookie Manager' provided by Mozilla browsers. It displays the details of all cookies stored inside the cookies file (cookies.txt) in one table and allows you to save the cookies list into text, HTML or XML file, delete unwanted cookies, and backup/restore the cookies file.


Free Download Manager

Free Download Manager (FDM) offers many options to control and schedule your downloads. This is a lightweight but powerful download manager. FDM can resume your broken downloads, limit the downloading speed, split downloads, into several sections, or connect to the Internet at a set time. Also, you can download whole websites from the remote server.

To use FDM in K-meleon:

  • Go to: Options > Download Options > Monitoring Tab
  • Check the Netscape 6x, 7x option
  • Click Apply
  • When asked to navigate to the Netscape plugins folder, navigate to the K-meleon plugins folder.
  • Click OK
  • Restart K-Meleon.


uGet

uGet is an open-source download manager. It provides a gui front-end to the popular aria2 download manager. It can run on Windows as a portable application.


Wget

GNU Wget is a free software package for retrieving files using HTTP, HTTPS and FTP. It is a non-interactive command-line tool, so it may easily be called from macros. It can resume aborted downloads, convert absolute links in downloaded documents to relative links, and run in the background. Instructions and a macro to use Wget with K-Meleon can be found here.


Accessibility

Non-Visual Desktop Access 0.6 (NVDA)

NVDA is a free and open-source screen reader for the Microsoft Windows operating system. This software can enable blind or vision impaired people to access computers running Windows for no more cost than a sighted person. NVDA allows the user to find out what is happening on the screen by querying the Operating system and using a speech synthesizer to output the information. Vision-impaired users will be empowered by additional accessibility features when surfing the WorldWideWeb with NVDA and K-Meleon. More info is available there | http://www.nvda-project.org/.


Media

Foxit PDF Reader

Foxit offers a freeware PDF reader that is packed with more features than Adobe's reader. The Foxit PDF Reader also includes a plugin for K-Meleon to read PDF files from within the browser window.


Sumatra PDF

Sumatra is a lightweight PDF reader. It supports older computers with limited resources. The last version of SumatraPDF to support Windows XP is 3.1.2 available from SumatraPDF's archive. SumatraPDF is free and open-source software.


Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat DC can be installed for Windows as an external application. It is Adobe's official PDF reader. Be sure to uncheck any boxes during installation for additional software such as anti-virus trials or Chrome extensions.


VLC Media Player

The VLC Media Player is a free and open-source media player. It supports nearly all media file types, DVDs, Audio CDs, Video CDs, and many networked streaming protocols.


Ruffle

Ruffle is a Flash emulator written in the Rust language. It is free and open-source software. Ruffle can run Flash games in a more secure, sandboxed environment. Ruffle's system requirements are higher than K-Meleon's lightweight requirements.


IrfanView

IrfanView is a free and open-source image viewer. It is very lightweight, supports many formats, and can be used on Windows XP. On older versions of Windows without a native photo application, IrfanView can be very useful when printing images.


Security

Avast Free Antivirus

Avast is a freemium antivirus program that supports many versions of Windows (including XP, Server 2003, and all the way up to 11). If you are using a version of Windows that came packaged with Windows Defender then you already have a built-in antivirus program. If you are using an older version of Windows then an antivirus program like Avast is highly recommended. Be sure to uncheck the boxes during installation for any additional programs like web browsers or toolbars.


VeraCrypt

VeraCrypt is an open-source utility to encrypt disks. It can encrypt hard disks, USB drives, partitions, and virtual disks that behave as files. VeraCrypt can run on Windows XP and later.


Spybot

Spybot is a freeware program to detect spyware or adware on computers. In addition to removing spyware and tracking cookies, Spybot can also repair the registry, Winsock LSPs, ActiveX objects, browser hijackers, bots, PUPs, homepage hijackers, keyloggers, trojans, and other kinds of malware. Safe-Networking Ltd. offers paid services now, but the original Spybot application remains free of cost.


CCleaner

CCleaner is a freeware application for Windows that cleans up your system. It removes unnecessary files to increase speed and removes personal information to protect your privacy.


Utilities

AutoHotkey

Autohotkey is a free scripting language that allows experienced users to create keyboard shortcuts to speed up common tasks in Windows. It can be paired with K-Meleon's macro language to automate many tasks.


7-Zip

7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiver. It can extract all common archive types including .7z, .zip, .rar, .xpi, and Linux tarballs. It can be used to create K-Meleon extensions. It can also manually unpack extensions including K-Meleon extensions and XUL-based Mozilla extensions.


doPDF

If your version of Windows does not come with a virtual PDF printer, you can use doPDF to "print" web pages directly to PDF. After installing doPDF, go to File > Print (CTRL+P) to print your web page and choose doPDF. You will then be able to create a custom PDF file from your webpage.


ClipTex

ClipTex is a simple plain text editor that reads the Windows clipboard at start-up. So when wanting to save plain text to a text file, there is no need to paste after opening the program, as the pasting is done automatically. The text can then be saved to a plain-text file.

Mozilla Cache Viewer

Mozilla Cache View is a small utility that reads the cache folder of K-Meleon/Mozilla/Netscape Web browsers and displays the list of all files currently stored in the cache. For each cache file, the following information is displayed: URL, Content type, File size, Last modified time, Last fetched time, Expiration time, Fetch count, Server name, and more. You can easily select one or more items from the cache list, and then extract the files to another folder, or copy the URLs list to the clipboard. More info about this utility.


Grammarly

Grammarly is a freemium writing assistant. The free version can offer improvements in spelling, grammar, punctuation, conciseness, tone, and word choice. To use Grammarly with K-Meleon, download the Windows installer. This will allow Grammarly to run in any text input area in K-Meleon.


Image editing

In the theme creation tutorials, you will find many tools for creating and editing theme components including icons, textures, images, and animation.
