I have FF running more smoothly now, but here are some more results from my little experiment: I did a comparison of the drive space used by the profiles for each of the two browsers. Disk caching is disabled in both of them: Firefox 43.04 Profile Folder: 1272 files, 33.10 MB, including extensions K-Meleon 75 Profile Folder: 39 files, 13.16 MB (The files in my macros folder take the plac

Yes, it just goes to show you what one can do with a browser and still keep it as light and fast as KM. To satisfy my curiosity I recently installed a portable version of Firefox 43.0.4. You might say I'm what one would call a "glutton for punishment", because wow, that's one bloated browser! :O Its UI is much less user friendly than it used to be, and I could not make FF e

Quoterobert today the mouse doesn't leap so much. In reality, it's not a mouse, i use a notebook, the "mouse" is near the keyboard. I guess you're using a touchpad. I have the same problem on my notebook, especially if the palm of my hand touches the edge of the keyboard while I'm using the touchpad. Some touchpad software has a so-called "palm check" fea

@siria: I just tried the File Open dialog in KM75, and it always brings up the previously opened folder, regardless of the fact that I have set a specific folder for all downloads, so there doesn't seem to be a connection with that setting. The file opens in the current tab, too, but as you suspected, changing the setting for typed URLs to open pages in a new tab affects the File Open di

QuoteJohnHell Where did you block? Even I haven't explained (yeah, sorry) I pretended to say hosts file. It is effective as far as you write the correct domain name. If you place an entry like "127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com" it will affect any application that uses domain name resolution on your system, as, when looking for it, it will be replied to contact to 127.0.0.1,

QuoteJohnHell Ok, it is www.google-analytics.com but it is interesting that only fails on that page :-? By the way, one way or another, being you I will block permanently (ok, I already do, but you understand me). Yes, thanks, that solves the problem! There's still that timed delay, but no crashes. Websites were always accessing Google Analytics, despite the fact that I had block

QuoteJamesD @ foliator How much functionality do you lose if you go the site without js? I'm just about to try that, and will get back to you shortly. Update: OK, just tried it. No crashes, and I get as far as the download request, which brings up the usual copyright disclaimer. However, when I click the link to accept the disclaimer and continue past that page, it simply reloads th

@JohnHell: You don't need to register to download, but there's a timed delay; I think it's about 20 seconds. When you download, there will always be a disclaimer about copyright, but you can choose to continue. Oddly enough, when I tried the site with IE9 it skipped that timer altogether and downloaded just as easily as it did before the site update! Then there's the fac

QuoteJamesD I went to the site, imslp.org, and looked for an author using KM76 beta 3. I had no crash. I did allow Javascript, but I don't know if the choices that I made would have run whatever script seems to cause you trouble. Thanks. I tried going there with no privacy restrictions whatever, but apparently that's not where the trouble lies. I'm still using KM75, having cust

The site imslp.org, which contains a library of downloadable music scores, crashes my KM75 soon after it has finished loading. If it doesn't crash immediately, scrolling down the page will usually do it, or trying to close its tab. This does not occur in my very old version of Firefox (15.0.1) or in Internet Explorer 9. So far this is the only site that has ever crashed KM for me. The sit

Well, the reason I use force reload is that when I get an error message from a site that I can't log in without cookies, a normal reload after enabling them doesn't help. Even after several reloads in succession, and after clearing all my browsing history, the site doesn't recognize that cookies and JavaScript have been enabled. Forcing reload solves the problem. I haven't

Now if I try to sign in somewhere and have forgotten to enable JavaScript and cookies -- which happens pretty often -- all I need to do at the error prompt is hit Alt Sp

A while back I created this tiny macro that toggles both JavaScript and cookies in quick succession, similar to a batch command: ToggleJC{ macros(pref_ToggleJavaScript) macros(pref_ToggleCookies) } It works perfectly, and I assigned Alt Space as a keyboard shortcut, but now I want the page to be automatically reloaded after I've toggled the two items. I've tried the following,

The above instructions are correct, of course, but sometimes I've had to hold the bookmark over the destination folder a long time to get it to expand; sometimes it refuses to do so. If the folder is already expanded, moving a bookmark in there is still a hit or miss proposition. It's not really a fault of KM, however, because I've experienced the same behavior in Firefox (and in I

This applies not only to K-Meleon, but also to Firefox, so it's apparently Gecko-related behavior, but I wonder if anyone knows how to force the display of local folders to always use the same sort order. When browsing the local folders on my hard drive, everything comes up in alphabetical order, and the folders are mixed in with the files. I prefer to see them like they usually are in Wi

Carson2, you make some very good points here, and I agree with most of what you say. I hesitated to comment, until I stumbled over this: QuoteCarson2We Westerners are very good at building excellent houses for ourselves, but perhaps you've noticed all our houses have all their windows facing just one direction. Dharnish, I'm curious what version of Firefox you're using. I still have a very old version of Firefox (15.0.1); I don't use it very often, just for comparisons with K-Meleon, but it has never loaded anything automatically at startup except my home page, which is a local file on my hard drive. The latest versions are likely to be quite different, as it appears that FF has long sinc

Ah, ha! You're right, I just tried opening the privacy menu via the compact menu button, then followed that up with the rebar menu command, and got the checkmarks this time. Have you ever considered a career as a detective, siria? PS: It's version 75, not the beta.

Quotesiria A little KM goodie, you can open any menu by a shortcut, using the rebarmenu plugin Choose your own shortcut, then add it to accels.cfg in profile folder: xxxx = rebarmenu(Menu Name) ... or in macros: plugin(rebarmenu, "Menu Name"); example: xxxx = rebarmenu(Mouse &Accelerators) Just important to add a &-sign before underlined characters. Quotesiria Am long since wishing for a global CSS blocker too in KM. that prevents downloading css-files at least. But what if the stylesheet tags are on the page being viewed, rather than in a separate linked CSS file? My own site is like that, but the images are small and there are no ads. The multimedia content doesn't run automatically. It gets downloaded only if the user deliberately

Quotesiria Regarding toolbars my taste is exactly the opposite, have two rows cramped full with icons - and I don't drink either Absolutely love this flexibility for all user tastes too! ... and for all kinds of hardware. You're probably using a machine with a much larger monitor, or perhaps a more conventional aspect ratio. The old standard for computer screens used to be 4:3, e.g.

KM75 has to be the most customizable browser on the planet! Thought I'd share some of my own customizations: I wanted to write a macro that would toggle more than one privacy item at a time, and it turned out to be far easier than I thought. Being too lazy to learn the macro language, I studied a few existing macros as examples, and simply stacked the commands, like this: ToggleJC{ ma

@siria: Quotefoliator I'll try out your revised macro, first on my machine then on his, and let you know what happens. Quotesiria The other macro has exactly the same effects as manual actions. If you manually switch tabs on his machine, does that help? If yes, there might be some prob with the macro that can probably be fixed... Yes, he can always switch tabs manually, which frees up the arrow keys, although he usually frees them up by pressing F6 followed by the Tab key to go in and out of the URL bar. If man

@siria: I've changed the internal name of your ImageTab macro to "View Image" (removed ":Tab") and hidden the original View Image from the context menu. Now the context menu shows "View Image" as before, but it's actually your macro in disguise.

siria, what I've done is to set my new tabs to always open next to the calling tab, which alleviated any problems with your first version of the macro. When the new tab followed some existing tabs, the macro still seemed to work, but a click on the new tab's content was still necessary to free up the arrow keys. Unfortunately my partner can't get this macro to work on his machin

Yes, your flippin' macro does work. Another fine macro by siria! This, too, should be included in KM's download package. Wow, that's three major improvements in a single day! Wish I could do that with my guitar-playing technique, but no one could ever write a macro for that.
